The Department of Computer Science (DI) of the University of Salerno is a key player in the regional, national and international landscape. It has a prestigious tradition both in teaching and research, being one of the first departments established in Italy to offer a degree in Computer Science (since 1971). Approximately 40 professors and researchers work at the Department. They all contribute to a certified didactic offer and a respected scientific production. The research output of the Department of Computer Science has been evaluated by the independent agency ANVUR as the best in Italy in the period 2004-2010. It was ranked second for the 2011-2014 term.
The Department is one of the “Departments of Excellence” selected on the Italian territory that is receiving funding from MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research), based on law 232 of 2016 (budget law 2017). The competitive selection process carried out by MIUR was meant to reward the Departments of the state universities that are characterized by excellence in their quality of research and projects. The Department was the only computer science department in the South of Italy, and one out of three all over Italy (Roma Sapienza and Verona). This important result has been achieved by the Department of Computer Science thanks to the high-quality research outcomes gained over the past years and thanks to a comprehensive and harmonic development project, which will combine existing research excellence in computer science with salient features of Industry 4.0 to foster educational, research and technological growth, with the direct involvement of local SMEs as well as big ICT companies. The ambitious project will receive considerable funds from MIUR over years 2018-2022, which will be invested in human capital, infrastructure and higher education as part of the global development strategy.
